Barbados has one of the finest communication networks in the Caribbean. Its geographical location has left it well placed to be a focal point for air and sea travel between the eastern and western hemispheres.
AIRPORT
The airport, which is situated to the south of the country is approximately 16km from the city centre. It was opened on October 19,1938 as the Seawell Airport and was subsequently changed in 1976 to the Grantley Adams International Airport.
Airlines
A wide range of airlines - international, regional and local - provide passenger and freight services between the island and other countries. BWIA International provides regular scheduled services to and from Toronto, New York, Miami, London and various points in Europe as well as other Caribbean points. Regular scheduled services are also operated by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, American Airlines, Air Jamaica, LIAT, Aeropostal, Air Martinique, Guyana Airways and Suriname Airways. Charter services are provided by Canadian Airlines International on a year-round basis. Air Transat, Royal Airlines and Canada 3000 Airlines Ltd., also operate out of Canada. Britannia Airways, Air 2000 Ltd., Caledonian Airways and Airtours International operate out of the United Kingdom. LTU International Airways, Condor out of Germany, Lauda Air from Italy and American Trans Air, Sun Country Airlines, Leisure Air, and Private Jet Expeditions out of the USA. Balair was operating out of Zurich, Switzerland from March, 1994. There are also a number of charter carriers operating out of South America, including PLUNA and LAPA out of Buenos Aires, Air Vias and STAF out of Sao Paulo, as well as services by Cubana Airlines out of Sao Paulo and Havana.
SEAPORT
Barbados has one of the most modern ports in the Caribbean, with both a Deep Water Harbour and a Shallow Draught Facility.
The port facilities are efficient and ship turnarounds fast. At present there are container berth and extensive storage space serviced by modern handling equipment.
Shipping services are provided to all major parts of the world.
